Stewart Island is south of the South Island and is third largest in NZ. We went there to celebrate Robin's birthday. It is now mostly national park, Rakiura National Park. The Rakiura Track is one of New Zealand's Great Walks. It is an easy three day, 36km hike with two nights in huts. We loved the island and put the walk on our list 'to do' -- you game? Our trip on to Ulva Island, in Paterson Inlet, was worthwhile, too. We stayed overnight at Land's End, the southern terminus of NZ Route 1, which runs the length of the country.

Hide and go sheep
The Camp Road Track is reached easily from our house -- it can be all on foot. The track goes up top to Larnach Castle (later). We wanted to show how well marked the track is on private land. We also took this day-hike shortly after Christmas. The decorated tree is on a road that carries VERY little traffic. We were pleased to be some of the few viewers.
Sandymount
We've learned the we are not yet tramping -- too wimpy; we come back on the same day. Sooooo, we guess we've been day-hiking. We like it anyway. Sandymount is at the end of beautiful drive and includes both Lover's Leap and The Chasm as overlooks. Sheep, ocean, tussock grass, beautful views, ho hum. We're told that the wind blows here, sometimes. Dunno. We'll see.

One of the most popular tramps near Dunedin is the Tunnel Beach Track. Have a gander.
Taieri Gorge Train
We rode the Taieri Gorge Train to Middlemarch. Lunch at the cafe was very good and very fun. Still, we decided that the shorter trip that turns around in Pukerangi would be plenty of train and plenty of gorge. When you come, we will recommend this outing.
Summertime
Because it is summer in Dunedin, the surfers are wearing their 'light' wetsuits. Do not ask about the other seasons.
First Tramp
We've read that the national pastime is 'tramping', which we know as hiking. Our first tramp was the Karetai Road Track, which goes from Smails Beach to the Highcliff Road. Take a look.
Arrival
When we arrived, Christmas Day, Barry from Dunedin Taxi was waiting. He whisked us to I.M. Premachandra's house, where Prema said we could stay while he and his family were in Sri Lanka for his daughter's wedding. He is a prince among men. We lived in his house for six weeks.

Going Kiwi
We arrived in Dunedin, New Zealand on Christmas Day 2006. Giving each other a country for Christmas was a little extravagant, but, hey, we've been friends a long time.
Driving on the left -- in my department head's GIANT SUV was the first challenge. So far....
We arrived on Monday, chose the house on Wednesday, and bought it on Saturday after the appraiser gave us his estimate of value. Jane saw one house (and that one only once) before we bought it. In fairness, we had shopped online for months and nothing else on the market came close.

Georgetown was wonderful from May 2005 to December 2006.
